The PJ Simelane Annual Music Lecture Expands to Celebrate Composers and Choral Music Heritage
The PJ Simelane Annual Music Lecture returns as a premier platform for celebrating South Africa’s rich choral music traditions. Established in honour of PJ Simelane’s enduring contribution to the arts, the lecture is dedicated to advancing thought leadership, dialogue, and inspiration within the music community.
This year introduces a three-part format:
1. PJ Simelane, the man behind the music: Choral music in South Africa carries profound cultural roots and influences, and audiences will be invited on a journey into the inspiration behind each composition presented by B Sharp Music Academy’s talented artists. With several beloved works from this distinguished composer, the programme promises moments of nostalgia that will stir memories of cherished times, while also offering fresh encounters for new listeners. This is not only a celebration of familiar favourites but also an opportunity for audiences to discover the richness of South Africa’s choral music tradition — an experience designed to leave a lasting impression.
2. Composer Profile: The lecture will spotlight Dr Thulasizwe Nkabinde, renowned South African composer, choral director, and Music Executive Producer at Channel Africa. As Director of the SABC Choir, Dr Nkabinde has played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s choral landscape, including his work on the beloved Imizwilili program.
3. Celebrating our Choral Music Heritage: The section will culminate in a performance of five works by South African composers, showcasing the nation’s rich musical heritage. This year’s repertoire includes compositions by MM Moerane, RM Mfamana, SJ Khosa, and JP Mohapeloa.
